As a seafarer, in some cases you must have a Polar Code certificate of proficiency if you are serving on a ship to which the Polar Code applies. You can apply for the Polar Code certificate of proficiency via our portal. The Polar Code is there to protect polar regions from effects that shipping can have on these areas. To this end, the code provides for measures for safe navigation and protection of the environment. The code also includes requirements for the education and training of seafarers.
An application for a Polar Code certificate of proficiency can only be submitted via the Kiwa Register application portal. In the portal, you can also view the status of your request:

Within 7 to 9 working days after your application is complete and paid, your Polar Code certificate of proficiency will be sent.
A Polar Code certificate of proficiency is valid for 5 years.
The rate for the Polar Code certificate of proficiency is legally determined by the Dutch government in the Regeling tarieven transportsectoren (Dutch) and includes 21% VAT. A Polar Code certificate of proficiency costs €175,45.
You can pay directly online via iDEAL and credit card (MasterCard or VISA). You can also pay via bank transfer afterwards, after receiving your invoice. An application will always only be processed when it is complete and paid.
